Office365: Exchange 2010 to Office 365 move mailbox issue

“Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation”

When moving a mailbox from Exchange 2010 to Office 365 in a hybrid environment you have to specify a username and password when the UPN domain of the account you’re are trying to move is not added to the Hybrid configuration.

(UPN domain has to be added to Domains)

During the migration of one of our customers not all domains where added to the configuration and the migration of the mailboxes failed with the famous error message: “Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation”

Move request details showed:

The call to 'https://fqdn/EWS/mrsproxy.svc' failed. Error details
: The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Negotiate'. The authentication header received from the server was 'Negotiate,NTLM'. -->
The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized..
    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (0:Int32) [New-MoveRequest], RemoteTransientException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : D913207,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.RecipientTasks.NewMoveRequest
At every attempt a bad password security log entry was created for the used account.

For reasons we will not bother you with we were not allowed to add the other domains to the configuration.

We found that this issue was caused by the LAN manager authentication level of the domain. In our case Office 365 was sending NTLMv1 requests which were refused by the domain.

Changing the authentication level to “Send NTLMv2 responses only“ solved this issue
